Former Brig. Gen. Hakan Evrim, who was the commander of Akıncı Air Base during Turkey’s July 15, 2016 coup attempt, described the events as amateurishly planned, illogical and contrary to Turkish military practice.
His summary of the coup attempt was widely shared on social media.
“Based on the experience I gained throughout my professional life, the coup attempt was an extremely amateurishly planned, irrational collection of oddities contrary to the customs of the Turkish Armed Forces,” Evrim said.
Akıncı Air Base, located near Ankara, became one of the central locations in the official account of the coup attempt and in subsequent trials.
Ankara blames the coup attempt on the Gülen movement, a transnational civic initiative inspired by Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen, and designates the movement as a terrorist organization. The movement denies involvement in the coup or any terrorist activity.
