The posters depicted confrontations between civilians and soldiers outside strategic locations on the night of the coup attempt.
Observers noticed that the image of a weeping soldier facing a crowd appeared to have been taken directly from Turnley’s well-known photograph from the Gulf War in Iraq.
The original image was published in the Detroit Free Press in 1991 and won the World Press Photo of the Year award the following year.

The use of the image raised questions about the source material used in official July 15 anniversary posters and whether the Presidency had obtained permission to reproduce the photograph.
