Ender Özkul, a deputy police inspector dismissed by a government decree during the state of emergency following Turkey’s July 15, 2016 coup attempt, remains imprisoned in Kocaeli Kandıra Prison. His 13-year-old son, Muhammed Eray, was diagnosed with lymphoma, and his condition has steadily deteriorated while separated from his father.
His mother, Oya Özkul, who frequently shares updates on social media, announced that the boy is not responding well to treatment. She noted that her husband had a hearing on January 10.
Following the hearing, the court refused to release the imprisoned officer. Oya Özkul shared the outcome on Twitter: “Eray Özkul fell ill due to sorrow following his father’s imprisonment and the family’s isolation from their social circle. Medical tests revealed he has blood cancer.”
The boy, whose treatment began in İstanbul, previously received a morale-boosting visit from Fenerbahçe football players.
