Selçuk Adıgüzel, coordinator of the Platform for Investigating Deaths during the July 15 Coup Attempt, alleges that then-intelligence chief Hakan Fidan placed a MİT-linked military officer inside General Staff headquarters before Turkey’s 2016 coup attempt.
In a video published on January 29, 2025, Adıgüzel identifies the officer as Remzi Albasan, then a colonel serving near Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar. Citing information from a former intelligence officer, he says Albasan profiled personnel, collected private telephone numbers and sought information about officers’ appointments and personal lives.
Adıgüzel says Albasan left Ankara about a week before the coup attempt, gathered his family at a house in Tokat, switched off his phones and returned to General Staff headquarters three days after the attempt. He argues that this conduct indicates prior knowledge of the impending operation and says Albasan had been positioned to monitor developments inside the headquarters.
Albasan was promoted to brigadier general in 2018 and later served as Hulusi Akar’s chief of staff at the Defense Ministry. Adıgüzel presents that advancement as further evidence of Albasan’s close relationship with the officials whose conduct he believes requires investigation.
