Turkish sociologist Uğur Kömeçoğlu has been detained as part of an investigation launched after Turkey’s July 15, 2016 coup attempt, academic Umut Özkırımlı announced on social media.
The reason for Kömeçoğlu’s detention and the accusations against him were not immediately clear.
The detention came amid a post-coup crackdown in which Turkish authorities have targeted academics, journalists and intellectuals along with tens of thousands of public employees accused of links to the movement led by Fethullah Gülen, which Ankara blames for the coup attempt.
Kömeçoğlu previously taught sociology courses at İstanbul Bilgi University.
He is the author of three books, “The Collapse of the Cult of Violence,” “Globalization and Western Despotism” and “Identity, Space and Everyday Life.”
Kömeçoğlu was regarded as a prominent member of a new generation of sociologists in Turkey.
