The ongoing post-coup crackdown in Turkey continued with simultaneous raids across 16 provinces, targeting the Journalists and Writers Foundation (GYV), an organization shut down by emergency decree after Turkey’s July 15, 2016 coup attempt. Detention warrants have been issued for 112 people.
The İstanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office launched the operations as part of its investigation into the Gülen movement, a transnational civic initiative inspired by Islamic scholar Fethullah Gülen. Ankara designates the movement as a terrorist organization and blames it for the coup attempt. The movement denies involvement in the coup or any terrorist activity.
Detainees reportedly include Milliyet daily columnist Mehmet Gündem, former Bugün daily columnist Nuh Gönültaş, and Aksiyon magazine reporter Behram Kılıç.
